The other day I stumbled across a post that really got my knickers in a knot. A photo was posted which at first glance looked like local store Untitled&Co's very cool and ORIGINAL strap dresses. After reading the caption and taking a better look at the photo, I realized I was staring at an H&M design. My jaw dropped but I was the least surprised by what I had seen.
There’s nothing worse than seeing one of your pieces copped by a big name brand. Not only will they make 10 times the amount you did… but it'll probably happen faster than it took you to design it….
And unfortunately it happens ALL THE TIME.
Big corporations are easy to fall for.. They have cool designs, decent prices and are just about everywhere. There may have a quick and easy factor, but the benefits from shopping locally far outweighs purchasing brand name items.
Independent artists everywhere work day and night only to get side-swiped by big companies... Choosing to shop from smaller businesses not only allows you to enjoy a unique and personal experience but helps support a much bigger cause.
IT HELPS CREATE JOBS.
When shopping local you help to employ a good chunk of your cities residents. Small businesses tend to buy most of their materials from local farms, vendors and other independent shops.
